Lidding films: what they are, and their uses

What are Lidding Films 

They’re basically flexible packaging, made from foil, paper, polyester, polyethylene, and other kinds of flexible packaging. They can be done in a peeled or lock tight. The easy-peel is simple, and you just have the customer peel the film to get to the contents. Lock tight film seals it so that knives and scissors must be used to et access to the product, offering an extra level of sealing to prevent contamination, and also will offer the best adhesion. 

What to use Them for

Types of lidding Films 

You typically get different types of lidding films that will definitely help you. For example, we’ve got anti fog lidding films, which are used in order to prevent moisture from forming on the inner parts of these containers. You also have the chillable lidding films, which are made specifically for temperatures that are lower, and usually are seen in refrigerated products. There is also high oxygen lidding films, which is modified atmosphere packaging which the product needs higher levels of oxygen and gas. 

There also may be freezer ones, which are used to withstand the ultra-low temperatures for freezers. So most frozen foods use this. Finally, you have the ovenable, which is the opposite of the freezable lidding films that you know of, since this can be used at much higher temperatures, and are safe to place in a microwave or oven as well. Lidding films can also be self-venting too, which allows for food to escape, and are heated in ovens and microwaves. And of course, you also have the resealable lidding ones too.
